Barton Hills Park: "We Are Barton Hills"
2015
The “We Are Barton Hills” mosaic exemplifies how collaborative efforts by the City of Austin and its residents can progress our shared vision for a better community. Under the leadership of project coordinators, Mina Kumar and Beatriz Mejia, and artists, Art Therapist Wanda Montemayor and Rachel Noffke, residents worked to create artwork that inspires the community and reflects the creative spirit that runs throughout Austin.

WE ARE BARTON HILLS is an extraordinary 177 foot long community masterpiece.
Created on the edge of Barton Hills Elementary School. The mural reflects a well loved South Austin Neighborhood and the beautiful people who live there.
These installations emphasize mindfulness, multicultural learning, and social-emotional skill building produced through extensive community collaboration across various ages, mobilities, and cultural backgrounds.

Wanda collaborated with local artists from the Austin Mosaic Guild to create focal pieces within the mural. This process showcases the talents of the local area and also provides the community with artistic learning and engagement.

This mural had over 1000 participants including children and adults from Barton Hills Elementary, O.Henry Middle School, Girl Scout Daisy Troup #773, and the Austin Mosaic Guild. The City of Austin Neighborhood Partnership Program, the Friends of Barton Hills Commuity Park, and the Barton Hills-Horseshoe Bend Neighborhood Association were all contributors to this massive artwork. Mayor Steve Adler and other city officials attended the unveiling to celebrate the mural, which took Wanda and the community 4 years to complete.
