When you look at a picture you take it in all at once. As you sit with the image, it begins to tell a story or share an emotion. My approach to therapy is through the arts, and I believe the process of creating can be healing in itself, without the pressure to explain oneself. An image can be shown, but the creator has the power to share the ins and outs of that process. As a person-centered therapist, I am a fellow traveler in the process of healing.
My journey into art therapy began as an art educator. In my experience teaching, I found that creativity opens the doors to communication and connection. I believe everyone has the ability to create. As a former educator, I understand the struggles and insecurities that children and teens face in the school setting. I also have a background with Third Culture Kids and Adults (those who grew up in a culture outside of their parents’ culture), and understand the search for identity among different cultures and finding a place of belonging. I aim to provide a safe space where each person can feel heard and understood.
