Art Therapist | LGBTQIA+ Advocate | Community Healer

“Hey there! I’m Zak, and I’m passionate about partnering with LGBTQIA+ and TGNCNB individuals and communities through creative, collaborative approaches to healing.”
Originally from Austin, Texas, Zak returned home after earning a Master’s in Counseling and Art Therapy from Adler University in Chicago. Zak is honored to serve their local community, bringing a deep commitment to social justice, anti-oppressive frameworks, and affirming care.

Zak believes that no one should have to explain what it feels like to face discrimination, unfair treatment, or the challenges of being part of a marginalized community. They create a safe, affirming space where your experiences are understood and respected. In therapy, Zak uses art, conversation, and reflection to help you explore your story, build strength, and discover new ways of moving forward.

In addition to their clinical work, Zak is an advocate, educator, and published author on the transformative power of art therapy in fostering resilience, identity development, and liberation within LGBTQIA+ communities. They are the founder and president of the Coalition for Queer Creative Arts Therapies, established in 2020 to mobilize and empower queer and allied students and practitioners collaborating with LGBTQIA+ communities. The Coalition fosters a supportive network rooted in a queer ethos of care and humility, sharing resources, knowledge, and advocating for equitable representation across the creative arts therapy field.

Zak is currently writing and editing a book that is forthcoming Summer 2026 on Queer Worldmaking in Art Therapy: Theory & Praxis, which is being published through Routledge Press. To read some of their published work and learn more about their process visit zacharyvandenberg.com

In the art therapy studio—whether virtual or in person—Zak offers stewardship and support for creative exploration, clarity, and curiosity.
